For a change in your workout routine, try getting in the pool. Whether you tread water or swim you will burn calories. While swimming you use virtually all of the muscles in your body.
Swimming
The weight of a swimmer determines the calories burned per hour. According to the MayoClinic.com, a person who weighs 160 lbs. burns 511 calories per hour. A person who weighs 240 lbs. burns 763 calories per hour.
Treading Water
For extra resistance, try treading water instead of walking on dry ground. In the book "Fitness Illustrated," author Brian J. Sharkey notes that a 160-lb. person will burn approximately 306 calories per hour while treading water. A 240-lb. person will burn 456 calories in that amount of time.
Considerations
While swimming, stroke efficiency plays a role in the calories burned per hour. Advanced swimmers burn less calories per hour than beginners.
