Natural At-Home Hair Conditioners for Extremely Dry Hair

In his book "Alternative Cures: More Than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home Remedies" Bill Gottlieb writes that dry hair may be due to hereditary factors because each strand is overly porous. Harsh shampoos can also strip your hair of its natural oils. Too much sun exposure or even frequent blow drying can cause hair to become brittle. Natural remedies you can make at home can help your hair restore health to vibrant health.

Avocado Treatment

Gottlieb writes that an avocado conditioning treatment can help restore dry hair. It helps to strengthen and moisturize hair by bringing protein to the hair shaft. Peel a ripe avocado and mix 1 tsp. of wheatgerm with 1 tsp. of jojoba oil. Mix the blend well. After shampooing and rinsing out your hair, rub the blend through your hair and into the roots. Place a plastic bag over your head, which will raise heat and help increase the conditioning process. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes then rinse it out. Apply this treatment to your hair once a week.

Jojoba Oil Blend

Adding certain essential oils to jojoba oil can also restore moisture to hair, writes Gottlieb. Purchase a 2 oz. of jojoba oil bottle. Add eight drops each of cedarwood and clary sage oil along with four drops of lavender essential oil directly into the jojoba oil bottle. Shake the bottle for several minutes and rub it into the roots of your scalp, combing it down to the ends. Jojoba oil, cedarwood and clary sage essential oils are all said to regulate the oil glands in your scalp. Lavender is known to stimulate hair follicles, which will help your overall hair health.

Sesame Oil Blend

The Prevention Health Books Staff suggests an essential oil blend for dry hair in the book "Natural Remedies: Nondrug Healing Strategies That Work Best." Add six drops each of lavender, bay and sandalwood essential oils to 6 oz. sesame oil. Warm the oil slightly in a sauce pan for just a few minutes, then massage into your hair. Wrap your head around with a towel and let the blend soak into your hair shaft for 20 minutes. Afterward, shampoo your hair twice if necessary to remove all the oil.

Aloe Vera Gel

Gottlieb also suggests adding 1 tsp. of pure aloe vera gel to your shampoo or conditioner. Massage it into your scalp and let it sit for five minutes. Aloe vera is a strong moisturizer and can be nourishing for dry hair. It helps to bring balance back into the hair shaft.
