Foot calluses are uncomfortable and unattractive. Left untreated, they can lead to ingrown toenails and corns, which are much more painful and difficult to remove. You can have calluses removed by a podiatrist, but this option is expensive and inconvenient. Insurance rarely covers podiatry services to remove calluses, according to Purdue University. You can also use a callus shaver that allows you to remove calluses at home.
Step 1
Soak your feet in a basin of warm water for 10 minutes before callus removal. You may add a couple drops of soap or shower gel to the water if you wish, but it is not necessary. Soaking your feet will soften calluses and make them easier to remove.
Step 2
Guide your callus shaver across the callused skin in a gentle motion, similar to shaving with a razor. Do not press hard with the shaver. The moistened skin should be easy to remove; do not tug or dig at thick layers of skin with shaver, as this can cause injury.
Step 3
Rinse dead skin from feet. Dry feet with a clean towel. Apply lotion and socks. Any lotion is acceptable, but some foot care companies make products specifically for feet that may be more soothing.
Step 4
Clean the callus shaver with rubbing alcohol after use. Store shaver in a clean, dry place.
