Calories in soups vary considerably. A cup of chunky ready-to-serve vegetable soup from a can contains 122 calories, according to TheCalorieCounter.com, while a cup of clam chowder from a can prepared with milk contains 164 calories per cup.

Amounts

Soups are generally a low-calorie food. A cup of chunky canned chicken noodle soup has 175 calories. A cup of tomato bisque from a can prepared with milk has 198 calories. Black bean soup from a can has 170 calories per cup.

Weight Loss

Soup before a meal may help you to consume less calories, according to a 1999 study in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." In the study, lean women were served chicken rice soup before a meal or chicken rice casserole with the same amount of calories. Women who were served soup ate less overall, so the researchers proposed that the water content of the soup enhanced fullness.

Considerations

Many soups are high in sodium. When buying soup from a store, look for sodium-free or reduced-sodium versions. When preparing soup at home, choose lower sodium broths, omit salt from the recipe and use fresh vegetables instead of canned.
