Flaky nose skin can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, but in most cases, this problem isn’t serious. Flaky nose skin is easily treated. However, sometimes there are underlying medical issues responsible for the problem. Understanding the causes of flaky nose skin can assist you in choosing an appropriate treatment plan.


Dry skin causes flakiness on the nose. Skin is prone to dryness during the winter months, when temperatures and humidity levels decrease. Indoor heaters can further aggravate skin dryness and cause flaking. Using hot water while washing your face and using harsh soaps can also make the nose flaky. Avoid sun exposure when possible. The sun can dry out your skin and put you at risk for sunburn. If your nose burns, the skin will flake.


Flaky skin can be treated by moisturizing daily. Choose a thick moisturizer designed for sensitive skin. In addition, use cosmetics that contain moisturizers to keep the nose moist. Keeping skin moist assists in preventing future flakiness. Use a gentle cleanser twice daily to slough off dead skin cells and flakes. If the skin is irritated, talk with your doctor about applying a hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation and soothe the skin. Try applying a damp, warm compress to your nose to reduce irritation.
