Vegetable Detox Diets

Detoxification is the process of allowing your body to eliminate toxins, heavy metals and other substances that may impact your health, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." The authors believe that detoxification is necessary for the proper health of your bones, organs and muscle tissues. Detoxification may also raise your energy level, allowing you to accomplish more during your day. Although foods may not promote elimination of toxins from your body, vegetable-based diets may allow your body to naturally detoxify by minimizing the introduction of new toxins. Check with your doctor before adopting a detox diet.

Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian Diet

According to the Vegetarian Resource Group, an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet excludes all types of meat such as fish, pork, chicken, beef, turkey and lamb. However, you can consume eggs and dairy products while following an ovo-lacto vegetarian detox diet. Replace meat products with lean protein foods such as tempeh and tofu which are made from soybeans, and seitan which is made from wheat gluten. Beans, legumes, seeds and nuts are also meat-free sources of protein.

Vegan Diet

A vegan diet is primarily based on vegetables and lean protein sources such as beans, tofu and nuts. It also typically includes breads, pastas and other grain-based foods. Like an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, a vegan diet does not permit meat of any kind. However, a vegan diet also excludes other animal products such as cheese, milk, yogurt, eggs and buttermilk, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group. The exclusion of animal products from your diet may allow your body to detox more quickly and efficiently.

Raw Food Diet

A raw food diet is a stricter version of a vegan diet. It primarily consists of raw, unprocessed vegetables and fruits, according to Rita Romano, author of "Dining in the Raw." It may also include other uncooked foods such as sprouted beans and legumes, raw seeds and nuts. A raw food diet does not permit the heating of food above 114 degrees Fahrenheit. However, you may dehydrate water-soaked grains and other foods to prepare raw food dishes. This diet is based on the idea that uncooked, unprocessed foods are ideal for optimal health -- and may help support efficient detoxification.
