Your daily calorie intake is determined by your body mass index, or BMI. At 130 lbs., if you measure 5'1" to 5'10", you're at a normal weight. Outside of these parameters, however, may require a calorie adjustment.

Body Mass Index

Body mass index refers to the percentage of body fat you have based on your height and weight. At 130 lbs., if you're taller than 5'10" or shorter than 5'1", you fall outside the range of "normal weight."

Basal Metabolic Rate

Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, will estimate the number of calories your body burns while at rest. BMR formulas calculate that number based on your age, weight, height and gender.

Harris-Benedict Equation

The Harris-Benedict equation is a formula that estimates the number of calories you need each day to maintain your current weight. You will need to multiply your BMR by a number that represents your daily activity level.

Caloric Adjustments

One pound is equivalent to 3,500 calories. To lose 1 lb. a week, you can cut 500 calories a day from your daily diet. If you're underweight, by increasing your daily caloric intake by 500 calories, you can put on 1 lb. a week.

Warning

Consult with your doctor before making adjustments to your diet.
