Hair Products to Help Thinning Edges

According to Total Beauty, although hair thinning is usually related to male pattern baldness, 40 percent of women can also experience it. Hair usually begins to thin around the edges and is caused by genetics, aging and hormones. Stress can also lead to hair loss, as well as environmental factors. There are well researched products on the market, however, that may help to thicken the hair shaft and stimulate hair follicles so new growth can occur.

Best Overall Product

Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested numerous hair thickening products through research and consumer review. Each product was rated on its ability to thicken, volumize, and smooth. The best product overall was Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Collection, retailing for only $4 each and found at most drugstores. Pantene has a range of products in this line. Customers also liked the pleasant aroma of the products.

According to Good Housekeeping, Samy Fat Hair "0" Calories Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, retailing for $8 and found at most drugstores, was the best thickening product for those with gray hair. Reviews also stated that hair felt much softer after using this product, although there was some concern of it fading colored hair.

Best Products for New Growth

Total Beauty also ran tests to score the best hair products for thinning hair. Having a healthy scalp is said to help hair health and new growth. Try Philip Kingsley Scalp Mask, retailing for $6.25, to stimulate new hair growth. Rub it into the scalp every two to three days before stepping into the shower to wash your hair. Nizoral Shampoo was also suggested for women who want to stimulate hair follicles. It retails at $16 and has ketoconazole, which can help to minimize inflammation of the scalp. Tricomin Solution Follicle Therapy Spray is a bit pricier at $68 and was also mentioned to be beneficial for helping new hair grow.

Good Housekeeping recommends Kiehl's Ultimate Thickening Shampoo and Kiehl's Rice & Wheat Volumizing Conditioning Rinse for hair that looks most put together after using. These products retail at $18 for the shampoo, $19 for the conditioner and can be found at specialty stores. Reviewers also liked how soft their hair felt after use.
