Is Alcohol High in Calories?

According to the National Center on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcoholic beverages are often high in calories and lack nutritional value. Excess consumption of alcoholic beverages may lead to weight gain, as calories are often converted to fat.

Types

Alcoholic drinks come in a wide variety of types and flavors, and may also be mixed with high-calorie additives such as sodas. Beer is typically high in calories: a 12-oz. serving contains an average of 149 calories. Distilled liquors such as vodka or rum -- as well as most wines -- typically have approximately 100 calories per 6 oz. Sweet wines and liqueurs such as vermouth can have as many as 180 calories per 6 oz.

Effects

Excess calories from alcoholic beverages are converted into body fat just like with food, so if you're concerned about weight loss, pay attention to the amount of alcohol you consume.

Considerations

Successful weight loss and wight management plans often require the reduction of high-calorie alcoholic drinks such as beer and mixed cocktails.
