Facial scars are by far the most troublesome scars. They are highly visible and can detract negatively from your appearance. However, you don't have to live with facial scarring. There are methods available to fix scars on the face. As explained by the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College at Cornell University, scars cannot be completely removed, but treatment can make them much less noticeable.

Step 1

Apply scar-reducing lotions or creams to your face. Over-the-counter scar treatment is not effective for very old scars or deep scarring. However, superficial, fresh scarring is treatable with tretinoin-based creams. The number of daily applications required for treatment varies based on the individual lotion's tretinoin content; check the label for daily usage guidelines.

Step 2

Obtain steroid injections at your doctor's office to fix keloid and hypertrophic scars. Keloid and hypertrophic scarring is characterized by large, raised protrusions. These bumpy scars are formed when excess collagen is produced during the scar's healing process. According to the University of Michigan, steroid injections help break down collagen, reducing the appearance of bulbous scars.

Step 3

Undergo dermabrasion treatment. Dermabrasion removes the topmost layers of skin. Once the scarred skin is removed, new skin grows in its place. According to the University of Chicago Medical Center, dermabrasion is well suited for small scars, including common acne scarring on the face.

Step 4

Undergo collagen injection therapy. Collagen reduces the appearance of crater-like "icepick" scars. Icepick scarring is common on the face, as it typically results from severe acne outbreaks. Collagen injections will raise the indented skin for a smoother, less noticeable scar.

Step 5

Resurface the skin with laser treatments. A "laser peel" removes damaged skin to combat facial scarring. Along with smoothing out scarred skin, a laser peel can also correct the uneven pigmentation associated with facial scarring, according to the University of Miami.
