Adding essential oils to your facial products will impart benefits for all skin types. When choosing the essential oil, keep in mind that the fragrance itself can either be calming or stimulating. Citrus scents, like lemon or grapefruit, work better for morning or mid-day as they are invigorating. Calming fragrances, like rose or lavender, work best in the evening before going to bed. Many oils can irritate your skin if applied directly. Always add them directly to the products or mix them in a carrier oil first.
For Oily Skin
Oily skin is due to the sebaceous glands producing more oil than is needed. This is believed to be caused by a fluctuation in hormones. Add 5 drops of rosemary or tea tree oil to your facial mask, cleanser or to a sauna. Both of these oils contain anti-microbial properties that will help prevent pimples and acne breakouts.
The addition of several drops of clary sage, ylang ylang or bergamot to your moisturizer will help prevent the look of oily skin. Lemon oil is also known for its astringent properties that will help control oil. Rosemary and clary sage should not be used by pregnant women. Lemon and bergamot should not be used right before going into direct sunlight.
For Dry or Aging Skin
Skin that is dry or shows signs of aging, such as fine lines or wrinkles, will need an oil that can help nourish and maintain or increase its moisture content. According to aromatherapist Valerie Worwood, 5 drops of rose oil can help bring a more youthful glow and improve the moisture of your skin. She also says adding to your product 3 or 4 drops of fennel oil, which contains a hormone-like property, can increase the firmness of your skin. Other oils that can be added to facial products include carrot, German chamomile, patchouli and lavender oils. Use five drops. Fennel, lavender and chamomile should be avoided during pregnancy.
For Normal Skin
Use 5 to 10 drops of carrot, hyssop, rose or lavender oil to your facial products if you have normal skin. These oils will help maintain the balance and keep your skin healthy. According to aromatherapist, Julia Lawless, sensitive skin will benefit from yarrow oil. For best results, use products made at home or are pure with no chemical additives. A cup of plain organic yogurt with the oil of your choice will make a gentle and moisturizing mask. Do not use rose or lavender oil when pregnant.
