It is important for parents to have health insurance so that they can take care of themselves and be healthy and productive for their families. Exercise and eating right is just one step in maintaining quality of life. Health insurance is just one type of insurance that families need to secure an adequate lifestyle. Securing your family's future occurs through having adequate life, home and auto insurance to protect your family as well.

Significance

The purpose of insurance is to pay for a loss or service that is significantly higher than what you can afford to easily replace out of pocket. Insurance is protection of assets and essentially protection of our finances. If you are without auto insurance, and you get into an accident, you could not only be stuck paying thousands of dollars for repairs, but also medical bills, legal fines and tickets. Insurance for homeowners also includes medical coverage in the event someone gets hurt and it's on your property or your fault.

Coverage

The amount of coverage you have with an insurance policy varies with what your company offers and what you want included on your policy, explains The U.S. Office of Personnel Management. You may want to consider meeting with an insurance representative who will go over all of your assets, ranging from home to auto, and how many people are in your family. He will also take into consideration the needs of family members, their ages, whether they are students or work full time and whether they have any pre-existing health conditions. Most auto and home insurance policies cover a loss up to 100 percent after deductible. Medical insurance often pays a percentage along with the premium and a co-pay.

Types

Health insurance helps you pay for office visits, prescriptions and expensive hospital stays. Many plans require that you visit their doctors and hospitals that practice in a designated region. Some plans are more flexible, allowing you to see who you want and choose which hospital to receive care at. Disability insurance is a type of insurance that you pay into in case you become disabled or unable to work due to illness, accident or having to care for a sick spouse or family member. Disability insurance is offered as short or long term, explains the Information Insurance Institute. Life insurance pays for your final expenses in the event of death. It may also pay a lump sum of money in order to pay off debts or distribute among family members. Auto insurance will pay for damages that occur due to accident, weather or vandalism. Homeowners insurance will cover damages that happen to your home and its contents.

Affordability

Insurance policies range from monthly payments to pre-paying for the entire policy for six or twelve months. When shopping for auto insurance, you should choose a policy that will cover your losses, but also give you the best premium rate for the life of the policy, explains Edmunds. With medical coverage, you still may have a lot of out of pocket costs with services that may not be covered, so consider this when budgeting your future costs. Free or low cost Medicaid insurance is available for families who live below their state's poverty limit.

Availability

Auto, life and homeowners insurance are available commercially through an insurance agent. Many families combine policies in order to get a multi-policy discount. Health insurance is typically offered through your place of employment and offers a variety of plans available based on your needs and what you can afford.
