Although the onset of wrinkles is inevitable as you age, lifestyle choices such as smoking, diet and excessive UV exposure play a large role too, according to Medical News Today. UV exposure explains why wrinkles first appear in delicate areas, such as under the eyes, which are exposed to damaging UVB rays daily.

A variety of treatments can help improve the appearance of these under-eye wrinkles, varying from natural remedies to surgery. The right treatment for you will be dependent on the severity of these wrinkles or the psychological impact they have on you.

Step 1

Blend the flesh of a papaya into pulp and then massage into the delicate area under your eyes if the wrinkles are mild. For the earliest stages of wrinkling, this natural remedy can be sufficient. Enzymes contained in the fruit help to etch away at dead skin cells, reducing the depth of wrinkles and encouraging new skin growth.

Step 2

Use soft tissue fillers -- or dermal fillers -- to treat mild under-eye wrinkles. A specialist will inject your wrinkles with either collagen or your own fat. The skin in the wrinkle crevice will slowly inflate or plump out until it is in alignment with the rest of the skin.

Step 3

Schedule a chemical peel session for your under-eye wrinkles. For slightly deeper wrinkles, a strong acid based chemical peel may be effective. The acid will burn through the epidermal, surface, layers of the skin. This wounding and removal of skin will encourage the body to reproduce new, less wrinkled skin in its place via collagen production. The depth of the remaining wrinkles will also be reduced via removal of this layer.

Step 4

Get laser resurfacing treatment for deeper under-eye wrinkles. A specialist will use a heat laser to burn off the epidermal layers of skin. This self-induced wounding mildly traumatizes the body and inspires it to increase collagen production to rebuild the lost tissue. New skin grows which is firmer and less wrinkles. Remaining wrinkles are shallower and less visible.

Step 5

Consult your surgeon concerning a facelift for severe under-eye wrinkling. A surgeon will stretch the skin and tighten all the underlying fibers and facial muscles in the face. This is done by removing skin and tissue at the bottom of the face and then the remainder is stretched to replace that which has been removed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Other natural remedies like the topical application of honey or milk are also reported to be effective wrinkle treatments. Soft tissue fillers, although effective, only last several months before results start to diminish. More than one session often is needed in chemical peel and laser resurfacing treatments in order to see optimum results. Face lift results can last five to 10 years.
  • Natural remedies can cause skin irritation, so consult a doctor before use. Chemical peels and laser surfacing can cause redness and soreness lasting several days. Mild bruising can occur from soft tissue fillers. Face lifts are a serious operation and should not be considered lightly, notes Mayo Clinic. Wrinkles will reappear over time. Nothing can stop the aging process.
