Serious Side Effects
Discontinue the medication and contact your physician if any serious side effects occur. According to Drugs.com, the following are considered serious side effects: chest pain or heavy feeling; pain spreading to the arm or shoulder; nausea; sweating; sudden numbness, especially on one side of the body; pain or swelling in the limbs; abnormal vaginal bleeding; migraine; confusion; yellowing of the skin or eyes; or lumps in the breast. Signs of allergy are also considered serious and may consist of difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling or blue coloration of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
Less Serious Side Effects
Drugs.com reports the following side effects as less serious: mild nausea, vomiting, bloating or stomach pain; breast swelling or tenderness; skin darkening; hair loss or growth; acne; weight or appetite variations; vaginal irritation or discharge; menstrual changes; decrease in libido; and headache, nervousness or dizziness.
Long Term Effects
According to the RxList.com website, several serious concerns have been reported as a result of estrogen and/or progestin therapy such as Prempro. Reports include ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, breast cancer, blood clots, pumponary embolism, stroke, elevated blood pressure, increased incidence of gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, lesions on the eyes and insomnia. The prevalence of these serious concerns varies. RxList.com reports about a 5 percent frequency during the first year of study. Individuals with specific health concerns, especially blood, cardiac or liver disorders, may be more susceptible to the long-term effects of Prempro, per Drugs.com.
