What Is Involved in a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that is performed on the abdominal wall. It is typically performed to improve the appearance of stomachs that appear flabby or to improve the looks of abdominal muscle or skin that are stretched out. It is not the same procedure as liposuction, which is performed to remove fat. Liposuction may be performed during a tummy tuck operation, however. A tummy tuck is considered cosmetic surgery because it is usually not a procedure that is needed for medical reasons.

Prior to Operation

Tummy tuck procedures are performed in operating rooms. General anesthesia will be given so that there will be no pain felt. General anesthesia will make the patient unconscious. Patients may be asked to stop taking ibuprofen, aspirin and other medicines that affect the blood's ability to clot. Patients are typically asked not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before the day of the surgery.

Surgical Procedure

A surgical cut, called an incision, will be made across the abdomen, just above the pubic area. The surgeon will remove fatty tissue and excess skin from the lower and middle areas of the abdomen. This will result in abdomens that are flatter and firmer. During some operations that are longer, the surgeon will also remove fatty tissue and excess skin from the sides, known as love handles. During some operations, abdominal muscles are tightened as well. The surgeon sometimes will insert tubes prior to closing the incision. These tubes help to drain fluid from the incision. To complete the operation, the incision is closed with stitches.

Endoscopic Surgery

Instead of making a large incision, the surgeon may opt to perform the tummy tuck by using endoscopes, which have tiny cameras. These cameras are inserted into the abdominal area through cuts that are very small. This type of surgery is considered less complicated and is called endoscopic surgery. The surgeon uses other tools to remove fat and skin through the small incision.

After Surgery

There may be some discomfort and pain for a few days after the tummy tuck. Elastic supports may be worn to help with the healing process. Strenuous activity should be avoided for four weeks. Typically, a return to work can be expected in two to four weeks.
