Getting pregnant after a tubal ligation is unlikely; however, it isn't impossible. According to the Couple to Couple League International, the failure rate for tubal ligation is approximately one-tenth of 1 percent. While most of the signs of pregnancy are the same as a traditional pregnancy, a woman who has had a tubal ligation must be aware of signs of an ectopic pregnancy, which is when a fertilized egg implants in one of the Fallopian tubes.
Common Signs
One of the most common sign of pregnancy is nausea and vomiting, which is also referred to as morning sickness. Breast tenderness, frequent urination, darkened areolas and lower back pain are also common signs of pregnancy. Extreme fatigue that is unexplained is another sign. Some women have food cravings and/or aversions. Even after a tubal ligation, a woman may think she is pregnant after she misses a regular menstrual period.
Uncommon Signs
Abnormal hair growth, altered taste and a desire to eat non-food items are all uncommon signs of pregnancy. Should you feel the need to eat items such as starch, dirt or clay, a trip to the doctor is warranted, as this is a sign of a serious medical condition known as pica. Some women also experience constipation. Severe vomiting that doesn't abate is a condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum.
Ectopic Pregnancy Signs
Severe pain on one or both sides of the abdomen, especially after missing a period or having a light period, is a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding or spotting is common. Feeling a sense of pressure in the bowels, being dizzy or feeling faint are also signs of an ectopic pregnancy. If you feel you have an ectopic pregnancy, emergency medical attention is needed, as your Fallopian tube may burst, which is a life-threatening situation.
