Resistance bands like those used in physical therapy, have become popular workout tools. Touted for their ability to stimulate weight loss and provide resistance during workouts, the bands are lightweight, compact and enable you to perform a variety of exercises. Newer types of resistance bands are adjustable and allow you to change the level of resistance for different exercises.
Function
Similar to the way gravity causes resistance when you workout with free weights, tension created when a band is stretched results in resistance -- the more you stretch a band the more resistance you will feel. When you use a resistance band to perform a workout you will stimulate muscles without having to put the force that heavy weight creates on your bones and joints. Using a resistance band will also help you to target the smaller muscles that may not benefit from exercising with free weights.
Types
Adjustable resistance bands come in kits that may contain ergonomic handles, ankle straps and door anchors that will help you target different muscle groups. Your adjustable resistance band kit will come with one or more bands that have clips on the end that enable them to be attached to the handles. This will allow you to choose your level of resistance by attaching the bands to the handles. Some kits allow the user to attach more than one band to a handle when working out.
Identification
Adjustable resistance bands are sold in different colors. While levels of resistance may vary between manufacturers, a color coded system is employed that will help you to differentiate between the bands. Typically the tension levels are light, medium, heavy and very heavy. When purchasing adjustable resistance bands you may want to purchase at least three different colored bands. Your body parts will require different levels of resistance to perform an adequate workout.
Benefits
Adjustable resistance bands are extremely beneficial and versatile tools that allow you to perform any exercise you choose. A single set of bands can provide enough exercise variety that you may not need to purchase additional equipment. The bands are small and light enough to be packed and bought along to the office, on trips, or vacations. Bands may offer all the benefits of a traditional workout at a fraction of the cost, with single bands costing as little as $10, as of 2010.
Warning
While adjustable resistance bands may help you achieve your fitness goals, injuries can occur with improper use. Always make sure the handles are correctly attached and the bands are properly anchored before beginning a workout. Bands weaken over time, so check for tears or discoloration before beginning a workout. Before beginning any fitness program seek the advice of a medical professional.
