How to Properly Cleanse Your Colon

Colon cleansing is the process of removing stagnant waste and toxins from the colon. Poor diet, overeating, lack of exercise and accumulation of toxins can cause digestive problems such as bloating and constipation, initiating the need for colon cleansing. In the presence of stagnant waste, the colon becomes an acidic, favorable environment for pathogenic bacteria, fungi, yeasts and microforms. Colon cleansing products contain fiber to increase the bulk, bind the waste, retain moisture and push the waste forward, sweeping the colon wall clean.

Colon Cleansing

Step 1

Take the colon cleansing product with water or juice as directed by the manufacturer or health care professional.

Step 2

Drink 8-ounces of pure water at least eight times daily to keep toxins flushed from the body.

Step 3

Take probiotic supplements as directed by the manufacturer after colon cleanse complex is completed. Probiotic supplements help to quickly recolonize the bowels with friendly bacteria and create a more alkaline environment.

Step 4

Feed the new healthy flora by taking prebiotic supplements as directed. Good sources of prebiotics are whole grains, especially oatmeal and barley, berries, fruits and greens such as dandelion and spinach (see Reference 2).

Step 5

Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to ensure your diet is high in nutrition for good health and fiber for continued efficient bowel evacuation.

Tips and Warnings

  • A colon cleansing product that contains magnesium will pull moisture into the colon, softening waste and make elimination easier.
  • Colon cleansing is not recommended for pregnant women or chronically ill persons. Herbs, a main ingredient in colon cleanse products, can have adverse effects (see Reference 1) in some circumstances, so consult a physician before undergoing a colon cleanse. Colon cleanse products are not FDA approved, so discuss them with your physician prior to use. There are no reputable studies that suggest that colon cleansing reduces the risk of colon cancer.
