Products for Those Allergic to Mold & Dust Mites

When the immune system becomes too aggressive against a trigger like mold or dust mites, an allergic reaction occurs. Most commonly, allergies are inherited. They can vary in degree from mild to severe, causing irritations like runny nose, itchy eyes and skin rashes. Moderate reactions can cause wheezing and difficulty breathing while severe allergic reactions can be life threatening. You can purchase a host of products to help keep allergens at bay in your home and reduce your alergy symptoms.

HEPA Filters/ Zippered Covers

Dust mites are creamy white, globe-shaped arachnids that are not visible to the naked eye. They thrive in humid conditions and live in carpet, clothing and linens, feeding on dead skin cells and causing allergic reactions to individuals with dust mite allergies. To help control the population of dust mites in your home you can use various products to clean dust-prone areas. Cleaning carpets with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter, protecting your bedding and pillows with zippered covers and keeping the humidity in your home low with good air circulation is beneficial. Use fans in moderate weather and air conditioning in extreme heat to move air and reduce humidity.

Over-the-counter Medications

Over-the-counter medications can help treat the symptoms of allergies caused by dust and mold. Phenylephrine is the effective ingredient in a variety of name brand medications for allergies such as Benadryl, Sudafed and Tylenol. It is a nasal decongestant used to ease nasal discomfort caused by colds, allergies and hay fever and works by reducing the swelling of blood vessels in the nasal passages, according to the National Library of Medicine. This medication can be purchased in tablets, liquid form, or in dissolving strips. Side effects include nervousness, dizziness and sleeplessness.

Dehumidifier

Keeping your home free of mold and dust with simple cleansing methods and a dehumidifier can be an effective method for controlling allergens. Mold spores are present in the air year-round, particularly indoors in damp areas like basements, washrooms, bathrooms and garages. To get rid of existing mold, use bleach to kill mold in showers, basements and other areas where mold breeds. Purchase a dehumidifier and use it to control the humidity in damp rooms. Continue to clean the area regularly to keep mold from recurring.
