An itchy, smelly scalp may be from excess oil on the scalp or other scalp conditions. There are treatments for restoring your scalp to normal and helping your hair to be its best. Your hair is a direct reflection of your scalp. Contact your doctor to determine the best course of action for your smelly, itchy scalp.

Identification

An oily scalp is both itchy and smelly. It can be caused by a hormonal imbalance or as a result of overactive fatty glands on the scalp. An itchy scalp may accompany redness and irritation and typically produces white flakes of dead skin. A scalp with excess oil may create shiny hair where the hair sticks together in clumps, traps dirt and emits a foul smell. You may be apt to frequently wash your hair because of the smell and itchiness, but this can actually aggravate the oil glands, making them produce even more oil.

Causes

There are a few scalp conditions that can create an oily scalp, making it smell and itch. Dandruff produces white, oily flakes of dead skin and can happen to anyone at any age. It is a chronic condition but can be treated. Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition of the skin and scalp that causes excess oil buildup. This can result in flaking, redness and itching. Scalp psoriasis is also an inflammatory condition that causes redness and itching, as well as scales, flakes and plaques.

Treatment

Treating your smelly, itchy scalp means treating the source of the problem. Selenium sulfide is often used for treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Ketoconazole is another ingredient found in anti-dandruff shampoos effective against dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Salicylic acid and coal tar are common remedies for helping with scalp psoriasis. Organic and natural shampoos are another way to help treat oily, smelly and itchy scalp conditions.

Significance

Selenium sulfide shampoos are anti-infective agents used to fight the infection, soothe the scalp and relieve the itching. Salicylic acid is considered to be a peeling agent as it works by getting rid of the outer layer of skin in psoriasis. Coal-tar shampoos help slow the rapid production of skin cells, found with psoriasis, while reducing inflammation and itching. Organic and natural shampoos contain herbs such as rosemary, chamomile, thyme, lavender, aloe vera, jojoba and pomegranate. They typically are made with either filtered water or deionized water and help to restore the natural balance of the scalp by effectively cleansing, soothing and properly hydrating the scalp.

Considerations

A healthy scalp relies on a healthy diet. Good nutrition, regular exercise, plenty of water and vitamin supplements will benefit both your scalp and hair. Talk with your doctor first before starting a new nutrition program or adding vitamin supplements.
