Information on Viagra

Viagra (generic name: sildenafil citrate) is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is a condition that affects men and consists of difficulty getting or maintaining an erection long enough to have sex. There are varying degrees of ED, and it is not the same for every man.

Significance

According to Viagra.com, the medication has been prescribed to more than 25 million men for ED. It is the most widely prescribed medication for ED.

Function

Viagra helps increase blood flow to the penis, helping it become harder for a longer period of time. The medication works up to 4 hours and works only when you are sexually aroused.

Types

According to the Mayo Clinic, for men up to the age of 65, recommended dosing is 50mg once a day, taken 1 hour prior to sexual intercourse, but it can also be taken 30 minutes to four hours prior to sexual activity. For men older than 65, 25mg a day is recommended.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, flushed face, abnormal vision, nasal congestion, insomnia and upset stomach. It can cause a drop in blood pressure for those taking certain medications; check with your doctor about possible drug interactions.

Warning

Do not take Viagra if you are also taking medication that contains nitrates. If you have an erection that lasts 4 or more hours, call your doctor, because this is a sign of a problem.
