If you are searching for dental insurance, you may have come across the term "PPO." A PPO, or Preferred Provider Organization, is the most common type of dental insurance and is offered by most dental insurance companies. It is important you fully understand your rights and responsibilities when purchasing PPO dental insurance.

Function

PPO refers to the type of individual insurance policy where the insurance providers have networks of doctors you may choose from when you need a dentist. A PPO is considered beneficial to everyone. Dentists join PPO networks as a way to obtain referrals, and in return offer insurance companies and clients discounted rates. These discounted rates mean insurance providers will have to pay less on claims, and customers pay less on procedures.

Features

If you purchase a PPO dental plan, you will have a co-pay along with a coinsurance amount. Coinsurance is the difference between what your insurance provider will pay and the price for services. Your out-of-pocket cost will be less than uninsured patients, due to the dentist's contractual agreement to offer discounted services. The amount of coinsurance you will have to pay will vary from one plan to another, and will depend on the type of dental work performed.

Options

As an alternative to using in-network providers, some PPO plans allow you to use a dentist who is not in their network. If you choose to visit a "nonparticipating dentist," the maximum benefit amounts may not be paid for services rendered. As a result of the lower level of plan, you will be required to pay higher co-pay and coinsurance amounts. Be sure to ask your provider about their policy on using nonparticipating dentists.

Benefits

PPO insurance plans give you the ability to see any dentist you would like; however, you will receive greater discounts when using an in-network provider. This type of plan makes dental treatment affordable, with some providers covering 100 percent of preventative dentistry. Most dentists prefer patients using PPO plans, as they typically assure they will be paid. Using a PPO plan can help reduce paperwork, as most participating offices will fill out and submit the paperwork for you.

Considerations

PPO plans are extremely beneficial, but there are drawbacks to this type of policy as well. Dentists have the option to turn away customers whose benefit level does not assure payment. Most PPO plans have deductibles, which may add up quickly if several members of your family are covered. These plans have limits on the amount they will pay, with some plans limiting you to $1,000 worth of services annually.

Potential

If the dentist you see is already a member of the PPO network, when your coverage starts, you will begin to receive discounted services. Sometimes, being a member of a PPO plan can mean shortened wait times and no paperwork; this may translate into less hassle for you.
