Triglyceride levels change dramatically after eating, so fasting for at least eight hours before a lipids blood test is critical for accurate results. Eating a meal that contains fat may raise normal triglyceride levels by up to 20 percent. Other factors that can temporarily raise triglycerides and give false high test results include drinking alcohol within 24 hours of the test, dehydration and certain medications.
Before scheduling a triglycerides test, discuss your current medications with your doctor. Beta blockers, birth control pills, estrogen supplements, protease inhibitors for HIV and corticosteroids can all raise triglyceride levels. Do not stop taking any medication without your doctor's permission.

Step 1

Schedule your blood test as early as possible in the morning.

Step 2

Eat a light meal in the evening before going to bed or 12 hours before your scheduled test. Choose lean protein and high-fiber complex carbohydrates that will slowly release glucose into your blood stream.

Step 3

Drink water only within 12 hours of the test. Do not take your daily multivitamin until after your test.

Step 4

Eat a small, easy to digest meal after your triglyceride test. Vegetable soup, scrambled eggs and whole grain toast or fresh fruit may be good choices.

Tips and Warnings

  • Prepare your body for a 12 hour fast by eating lightly for a few days before your scheduled blood test.
  • If you are pregnant or diabetic it may not be possible to fast. Speak to your doctor.
