Breast cancer is a devastating disease that ranks as the second most common cancer found in women after skin cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Symptoms

Breast cancer symptoms include bloody discharge from the nipple, a breast lump, inverted nipple and changes in breast size and color, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Risk Factors

Risk factors for breast cancer include older age, family history, radiation therapy, race, and reproductive and menstrual history.

Diagnosis

According to the National Cancer Institute, many methods can be used to diagnose breast cancer, including mammograms (X-ray of the breast), breast ultrasounds (image via sound waves), biopsies (cell sampling) and the clinical breast exam (feeling for lumps).

Treatment

According to the Mayo Clinic, breast cancer treatment options include surgery, radiation (energy beams that kill breast cancer cells), chemotherapy (toxic drugs) and hormone therapy.
