A goal kick in soccer happens when the ball has entirely passed the goal line without going into the goal and the last person to touch the ball was on the attacking team, according to FIFA rules. The kick, typically taken by the goalie, is a way to restart the game after play has stopped because the goalie has taken possession of the ball. A player can score a goal on a goal kick, but this is a difficult task because the ball would have to cross the entire field of play to score in the opposing goal.
Step 1
Place the ball on the ground inside the goal area. The ball can be placed anywhere in the goal area, including on the goal line, at the kicker's discretion. The goal area constitutes the rectangular area immediately in front of the goal that is defined by white lines extending 6 yards from each goal post, FIFA rules state. The white lines are including in the goal area.
Step 2
Assess the positioning of players from your team and the opposing team so you can decide where and to whom to kick the ball.
Step 3
Set yourself in a position to kick the ball, at the same time monitoring the positioning of other players.
Step 4
Kick the ball in the direction of a member of your team.
Step 5
Return to your position and resume play as normal.
Tips and Warnings
- After a goal kick, the kicker cannot touch the ball again until another player from either team has touched it, FIFA rules state. Furthermore, no player may touch the ball until it has fully left the penalty box area. If the ball does not leave the penalty box area after a goal kick, the kick must be retaken, according to FIFA rules. The penalty box is the larger area immediately in front of the goal. It is outlined in white lines that extend 18 yards from each goal post and are connected with a line parallel to the goal line.
