Donating blood is a quick and convenient way for some people to contribute to their communities. Although you do not need to consume a specific amount of calories, plan to eat a healthy meal before donating blood.

What to Eat

The American Red Cross recommends eating a healthy meal low in fat and high in iron before donating blood. Iron-rich foods include most types of meat, tofu, seeds, raisins, prunes and dark, green, leafy vegetables. If you must eat on the run, opt for a slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza or a beef burrito.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid eating fatty foods within the few hours before a blood donation, the American Red Cross instructs. Since the fats stay in your blood for several hours, they may falsely indicate an infection in your blood. Fatty foods include hamburgers, ice cream, fried foods, chocolate and most desserts.

Drink Water

Before donating blood, the American Red Cross also recommends drinking 16 more ounces of water than your body is used to. The extra fluids help to keep your fluids and electrolytes balanced throughout the donation process.

After Donating

Immediately after donating blood, take advantage of the snacks offered to you. Enjoy a small snack with water or juice to prevent dizziness or lightheadedness. For the next 24 to 48 hours, continue drinking plenty of water to replace any fluids that were lost during the blood donation.
