Treadmills provide the workout of walking with the safety and convenience of exercising indoors. A cardiovascular exercise, walking on a treadmill burns more calories than resistance exercises, such as lifting weights.
Baseline Calorie Burn
Health and fitness resource website Nutristrategy gives approximate calorie burns for different activities. According to Nutristrategy, a 155 lb. person burns about 175 calories per hour walking on a treadmill at a slow pace. At a moderate pace, the burn rises to 230 calories per hour. Walking vigorously, you burn about 260.
Body Weight
After exertion level, your body weight has the most effect on how many calories you burn in an activity. A 205 lb. person burns 70 more calories per hour walking a treadmill at a moderate pace than does a 155 lb. person. A 130 lb. person burns 40 fewer calories.
Metabolism
Your metabolism is how fast your body naturally burns calories. According to Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, the more muscle your body has, the more calories it burns at all activities. Walking a treadmill builds muscles. This means that the more you walk on a treadmill, the more calories you burn with each subsequent session.
