Volleyball is a team sport that can be played on an indoor or outdoor court. Because the only equipment required is a ball and net, the game is highly accessible to most people. It can be played as a casual game between friends or at a competitive level in tournaments.
Calories Burned
According to MayoClinic.com, a 160 lb. person playing a casual moderate-intensity volleyball game burns 292 calories per hour. The caloric expenditure for someone who is 200 lbs. is 364 calories per hour and a 240 lb. person burns 436 calories per hour playing volleyball. Competitive players can burn far more, up to 15 calories a minute, or 900 per hour.
Fitness
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a moderate amount of physical activity every day and considers 45 minutes of volleyball to be an example of moderate daily physical activity. This level of physical activity can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, hypertension, colon cancer and diabetes.
Considerations
Because of their high caloric expenditure, professional volleyball players have to consume up to 4,500 calories a day to maintain their current weight and avoid losing muscle mass. A casual volleyball player of 160 lbs. burns enough calories to lose a pound in about 12 hours of play.
