Raloxifene, also known as Evista, is a medication used to prevent breast cancer from metastasising (spreading to other parts of the body).

Features

Raloxifene blocks estrogen in the breast. Estrogen is the chemical in your body that is responsible for breast cancer cell growth.

Other uses

Raloxifene is also used to treat osteoporosis (bone breakdown) in women. Rather than blocking estrogen, Raloxifine mimics it in the bone, causing a decrease in bone loss, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Side Effects

According to Medline Plus, Raloxifene's common side effects include hot flashes, sweating, problems sleeping and swelling. Contact your doctor if these or any new side effects develop.

Precautions

Do not take Raloxifene if you have a history of blood clots in your legs, eyes or lungs. Tell your doctor about your medical history, medications and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dose

Raloxifene is administered in a 60 mg (milligram) tablet form. A doctor will determine the correct dosage for you. According to MedlinePlus, you should take this medication with foods and drinks rich in calcium and Vitamin D.
