Cause

Astigmatism's cause is unknown. According to Medline Plus, astigmatism can be present at birth.

Features

Astigmatism results when there is a curvature in the cornea. It is fairly common and can also occur after surgery, eye trauma and disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Treatment

According to Medline Plus, glasses, hard contacts and surgery can correct astigmatism.

New treatment

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) can treat astigmatism by using a laser to correct the corneal curvature.
