Effective Treatment for Pustular Psoriasis

Pustular psoriasis is a rare form of psoriasis that can affect any person of any gender, though is less common among children. Pustules that appear like raised, reddened bumps on the skin characterize the condition. Several types of putular psoriasis exist, including palmoplantar pustulosism, acropustulosis and Von Zumbusch pustular. Individual symptoms occur with each form of pustular psoriasis, but all will include widespread patches of pus-filled blisters. These blisters may dry quickly and reappear days or weeks later. Von Zumbusch psoriasis requires immediate medical attention, as the condition can be life- threatening due to complications such as dehydration and rapid pulse. Though a variety of treatment options are available for pustular psoriasis, the unpredictability of the condition can make finding an effective treatment difficult. In addition, each person may have a different experience with the same treatment.

Palmoplantar Pustulosis Treatments

Palmoplantar pustulosis typically affects adults, causing outbreaks on the palms and soles of the feet. It is more common among smokers and may be an inherited condition. Those who have palmoplantar pustulosis may also have other skin complications, such as dermatitis, tinea pedis (a fungal infection of the feet) and plaque psoriasis. Effective treatments for this condition include strong topical steroids like clobetasone proprionate, which should be used twice daily and sparingly for short periods, as side effects may become problematic. With extensive use the product might also lose its effectiveness.

Acropustulosis Treatments

Acropustulosis is an unusual type of pustular psoriasis, affecting the ends of fingers and occasionally the toes. The lesions are painful and can cause the nails to become deformed. Severe cases can lead to changes in the bones. While the condition is hard to treat, the most effective remedies might include oral medications such as methotrexate or retinoids and PUVA therapy ( photochemotherapy), which can be combined with the oral medication hydroxyurea.

Von Zumbusch Treatments

Von Zumbusch is a life-threatening form of psutular psoriasis that can appear suddenly on the skin. It is characterized by extensive areas of reddened skin that become tender and painful. Hours after the redness appears, pustules form on the skin. Approximately one to two days later, the pustules dry, leaving smooth skin behind. Flu-like complications that are present with the condition may require hospitalization. Antibiotics are typically used to effectively treat the condition.
