Omega-6 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that must be obtained from food or supplement sources, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. These fatty acids are primarily found in meats, but can also be derived from black currant oil, evening primrose oil and other sources. Nuts, seeds and vegetable oils also contain these fats. Obtain these fatty acids from nuts, seeds and other foods that do not contain saturated fats, which may counteract the heart healing properties of omega-6 fatty acids.

Diabetes Pain Management

Gamma-linolenic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid, is necessary for the protection of the nervous system. This fatty acid may help heal nerve endings. This may help reduce pain caused by nerve damage in people with diabetes, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. This benefit is more pronounced in people who adhere to a healthy diet and use other means to control blood glucose levels.

Bone Health

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, low levels of omega-6 fatty acids are linked to bone diseases, particularly osteoporosis. Gamma-linolenic acid may help reduce bone loss associated with osteoporosis, especially in people over the age of 65.
