If hair is not taken care of properly, it may become damaged, dry, thin and brittle. Hair loss and other hair disorders may be the result of improper hair care. A selection of vitamins, taken either through food or supplements, can help keep hair healthy.
Biotin
Biotin, commonly known as vitamin H, is part of the B group of vitamins. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that all B vitamins are essential for healthy hair. Preliminary evidence suggests that biotin supplements may be able to improve hair that is thin or splitting. Biotin, in combination with a zinc supplement and topical clobetasol propionate (a treatment containing anti-inflammatory properties to prevent skin disorders such as eczema), is effective in treating a hair disorder called alopecia. Low amounts of this vitamin in the body can contribute to hair loss. Biotin can be found in foods such as cooked eggs and soybeans.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E helps to promote blood circulation in the scalp, leading to healthy hair growth. It also helps to build hair capillaries in the body and stimulates hair follicles, which are responsible for making the hair grow. When more capillaries are present, blood flow in the scalp improves. Vitamin E may help to prevent split ends, while also helping heal damaged hair. Also, vitamin E helps protect hair from damage-causing substances called free radicals, which may make hair dry or encourage hair loss. Vitamin E can be ingested through food or supplements. Vitamin E can be found in seeds, corn, nuts and spinach.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A helps to form a natural body oil called sebum. This oil, found on the scalp and skin, helps to ensure the hair is healthy by keeping it hydrated. It is also involved in the regular maintenance of hair by regulating retinoic acid inside the hair follicles. Vitamin A is often obtained through food, but it can be taken in supplement form. Good sources of this vitamin include carrots, liver and kidney.
Other Vitamins
Another B vitamin, vitamin B12, helps to treat hair loss by helping the body deal with stress, which is known to be a contributing factor towards hair loss. It also helps prevent hair loss because it is a component of the hair itself. Also, vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron, which is essential for the growth of hair.
