If you find yourself in the beautiful city of Fairbanks, Alaska, for the holidays, you can be sure you'll never be bored. Fairbanks has so many things to do it's no surprise the city is the host of the 2014 Arctic Winter Games. Fairbanks offers activities to fill most any holiday visit.
Ice Fishing
If you have never been ice fishing, you can do it in Fairbanks. The Chena Lake Recreation Area located just outside of Fairbanks offers you the chance to rent out a custom ice fishing house---which comes with a wood stove and a good supply of firewood to keep you and your family warm---for a 24 hour period, giving you plenty of time to catch a hearty dinner.
Skiing
If you're going to visit a park in wintertime, you probably want to get in some time on the slopes. Thankfully, Fairbanks has a number of ski destinations for you. One of the best is the Birch Hill Recreation Center. Working in cooperation with the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks, Birch Hill operates and maintains a trail system of varying difficulty and on a number of types of terrain. The center even hosts official races for diehard skiers. Chena Lake is another great pick for skiing, as it offers cross-country trails and fierce competitions.
Entertainment
If you want to spend your holidays seeing shows and walking around shops, you should consider Pioneer Park. Its signature attractions include half a dozen museums ranging in subject from Native Alaskan art to a riverboat showcase, art galleries, rides, shows, mini-golf and a host of shops. Every winter season the park has a holiday celebration, with winter-themed food, art, movies and even an international holiday bazaar.
Playgrounds
If you're going to be making a trip to Fairbanks for the holidays, you might as well give the kids something fun to do. Fairbanks has several smaller parks with playground equipment for the youngsters to enjoy. Consider Growden Park and Mercer Park, both of which have picnic areas and beautiful scenery for the adults to enjoy while the kids play.
Hiking
On the chance that the winter temperatures don't keep you holed up inside, you should spend some time hiking at a few of Fairbanks' most scenic parks. Chena Lake has some of the best views alongside its ski trails and Pioneer Park offers guided tours through its lush forests.
