The city of Murfreesboro's Parks & Recreation Department, located in the state of Tennessee, offers a wealth of summer programs for children, teens and adults. Choose from day camps, workshops or planned activities. Or you can participate in active events centered around the swimming pool or other athletic activities. Besides getting a good workout at some of the events, you and your kids will also get to know other like-minded members of the community.
Types of Programs
Summer programs include swimming pool hours at two different facilities. Pool programs include lap swims, recreation pool play and action-packed water exercise classes. The department also puts on events involving the pool, including the Rock the Pool party held near the 4th of July holiday. You'll also find theater groups for kids as well as day camps and workshops for children and teens on a wide range of topics. You can also enjoy playing team sports managed by the department.
Day Camp Programs
The department offers day camps covering topics from tennis and theater to crafts and art. Some of the classes provide instruction, classes and workshops in herb gardening, making a kite and creating a kaleidoscope. Day camps also offer athletic activities including soccer, football, tennis and cheerleading. For nature enthusiasts, kids will love the classes on reptiles and nature.
Cooperative Programs
The Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation works with other local businesses and organizations to offer unique programs, including writing and arts workshops. The workshops are offered in conjunction with Express Yourself Café. The program offers teens writing and arts workshops led by local artists. The Parks and Recreation Department also sponsors the Sunshine Players so children can enjoy drama and theatre classes.
Facilities
One of the newest Parks and Recreation facilities includes the Water Park at Sports Com. Opening in July 2010, the pool offers summer swimming with lifeguards. You can also head to the Patterson Park Community Center for pool access. The Cannonsburg Village offers more activities focused on the history of early Tennessee. The village also features the Murfreesboro/Rutherford Art League and Gallery which offers summer workshops and classes for new and experienced artists. Another facility, the McFadden Community Center, offers athletic and general programs as well as a game room and arts and crafts all summer long.
