Minnesota boasts more than 12,000 lakes, earning its nickname as "Land of 10,000 Lakes" and offers some of the finest fishing in the upper Midwest. Experience the adventure of battling huge muskie, combine your fishing with other outdoor activities and brave Minnesota's winters for a little ice fishing. Anglers of all ages can experience fishing adventures year-round in Minnesota.

Hot Spots for Muskie Fishing

Muskellunge or muskies thrive in Minnesota lakes and provide anglers with a challenging fishing adventure. More than 50 well-stocked lakes are scattered across the state. Test your skill at these hot spots: Mille Lacs, Lake Vermilion, Leech Lake, Lake Minnetonka, Cass Lake and Lake Bemidji. These voracious, powerful and elusive fish are among the largest in Minnesota.

Family Fishing with Guides

Whether you`re a novice or experienced fisherman, planning a family fishing trip can be daunting, not to mention expensive. Your best bet is to plan your adventure using an experienced fishing guide who specializes in family excursions. Many Minnesota outfitters cater not only to taking families on guided trips, but offer tutoring to make the most of your time spent on the water. Find affordable family trips online through the Fishing Tutor & Family Fishing Guide service.

Camp, Hike, Fish

Go beyond the average fishing trip and rough it in The Superior National Forest. Most of the forest's 277 backcountry campsites are on a body of water. Poplar River Rustic Campground in the Tofte Ranger District is among the more basic camping spots. Four first come, first served tent sites provide access to river and stream fishing and hiking. Site amenities include outhouses, tables and fire rings. Drinking water is not available and camping fees are not charged. For more outdoor adventure, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is within the Superior National Forest. It offers wilderness camping.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing in Minnesota takes on an almost festive atmosphere, with major ice-fishing contests, ice drag racing and winter carnivals, Ron Hustvedt Jr. writes in Minnesota Sportsman magazine. Mille Lacs in central Minnesota is a haven for avid ice fishermen. Fish solo or use a guide service that can provide heated fish houses or portable wheel houses.
Mille Lacs is one of the state's top multispecies lakes, according to Hustvedt, with walleye, jumbo perch, northern, crappie and bluegill to be caught there during the winter.

Fishing Licenses

Minnesota law requires all resident and nonresident fishers over age 16 to purchase a license. Residents must provide a Social Security number to receive a license. Licenses can be purchased online, by phone or mail-in application, or in person. There are several license options available; anglers should consult local authorities prior to fishing.
