Mountain biking in Hawaii offers an opportunity to explore the exotic atmosphere of the islands while enjoying fresh air and sunshine. Miles of scenic trails are available on the different islands to give the novice or experienced cyclist a challenge. With so many trails to choose from, it's easy to center your Hawaiian vacation around this off-road adventure.
Kuamoo-Nounou Trail, Kauai
The Kuamoo-Nounou Trail on the island of Kauai takes riders around the lower slopes of Nounou Mountain. This 4.6 mile trail, just outside of city of Kapaa, provides an elevation gain of 325 feet and is good for cyclists of intermediate to advanced skill levels. Waterfalls, forest canopy, regular cloud cover and the Makaleha mountains looming in the distance add to the atmosphere as riders navigate the trail around the "Sleeping Giant."
Kaena Point Trail, Oahu
Situated outside the city of Mokuleia on Oahu, this 10-mile trail, open year round, offers lovely Pacific views and, with minimal elevation, it is appropriate for even inexperienced riders. The Kaena Point trail offers two starting points--one in Haleiwa and one in Waianae. Cyclists may want to bring water, a hat and sunscreen as this trail provides little shade. When you get toward Yokohama Beach, you will need to stop and carry your bike across a part of the trail which has been eroded.
Molokai Forest Reserve Trail, Molokai
At 20 miles in length and a total gained elevation of 3,400 feet, the Molokai Forest Reserve Trail takes some time to complete. A welcome challenge for experienced cyclists, but beginning riders may want to stick to the lower foothills as some of the steeper inclines may be beyond their skill level. This winding trail offers a chance to enjoy native Hawaii flora.
Kaupo Road, Maui
Kaupo Road in Kaupo, Maui is a year-round trail of 4.5 miles with an elevation gain of 100 feet. This out-and-back trail is appropriate even for the inexperienced cyclist. This ride provides the opportunity to stop in the small fishing town of Kaupo to buy snacks, drinks and souvenirs at Kaupo Store and to visit some of the oldest churches on Maui.
Pine Trees Trail, Hawaii
With 6.4 miles and minimal elevation gain, the Pine Trees Trail near Kona, Hawaii is suitable for even the novice cyclist. This out-and-back trail runs from north to south and is open year round. The trail stops at the Ho'ona Historical Preserve and offers the opportunity to explore houses, ancient grave sites and historical locations from the early nineteenth century.
