Serotonin is a hormone found in the pineal gland, blood platelets, the gastro-intestinal tract and the brain. Also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine, serotonin transmits nerve signals between cells and produces narrowing in the blood vessels, according to MayoClinic.com. Changes in serotonin levels in the brain can alter mood. Medications that affect production of serotonin are used to treat depression.

Foods High in Tryptophan

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is the building block of serotonin. Eating protein that contains tryptophan with a small amount of carbohydrates will help the tryptophan cross the blood brain barrier to make serotonin. Turkey, tuna, shellfish, tofu, hummus, kelp and eggs are high in tryptophan.

Foods High in Sugar

Dr. Sears states that foods high in sugar, such as candy or sweets, will increase your serotonin levels by triggering the release of insulin, which will clear the bloodstream of all amino acids except for tryptophan. The tryptophan reaches your brain faster and will create more serotonin. However, constantly eating foods high in sugar does carry other risks including insulin resistance, hypoglycemia and type 2 diabetes.

Foods High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of unsaturated fat that makes up the majority of nerve cells in the brain, according to the Franklin Institute. The long-chain fats EPA and DHA, which are two types of omega-3 fatty acids, are helpful in treating depression and are critical for brain function, according to MayoClinic.com. Fish high in omega-3s include salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and snapper.
