Brown spots on the face can occur from acne, pimples or cuts that have left a scar. They can also occur from excess exposure to sun and are also known as age spots or liver spots. Over-the-counter medications and medical procedures, such as lasers, can help to remove these spots. But first try inexpensive home remedies to get rid of the scarring or spots. Consult a medical professional about any allergic reactions to home remedies or worsening skin conditions.

Horseradish and Vinegar

Horseradish paired with vinegar helps to exfoliate the skin and can gradually lighten brown spots. Mix grated fresh horseradish with 1/4 cup of vinegar. Allow the mixture to sit for two weeks, strain it and apply it to brown spots three times a day.

Lemon

Lemon juice is acidic and helps to lighten dark spots and scars on the skin. Apply fresh lemon juice directly onto the brown spot.

Castor Oil

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties and is also acidic. Apply the oil to the skin twice a day to help lighten brown spots.

Onion Extract

Onion extract, which has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, is found in many commercial scar treatments. It works to stop the excess collagen production that leads to scarring of the skin. It can be found in a gel form in stores and applied to the brown spot or scar three to four times per day to lighten it.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties that can help reduce the appearance of scars and brown spots. Aloe vera can be found in stores in gel form or as a plant. To use the gel directly from the plant, cut one leaf with a knife. Drain the excess liquid from the leaf. Remove the gel from the leaf and rinse it with cold water. Rub the gel into the scar or brown spot to lighten.
