Sinus congestion causes pain and pressure in your face. Sinus problems can be the result of allergies, or a head cold or other virus, and symptoms may include pressure, frequent sneezing, nasal discharge, postnasal drip and violent coughing. If you prefer using natural treatments to relieve symptoms, herbal remedies for sinus congestion are one of several natural choices. However, herbs may cause side effects. Always consult your physician before using any alternative remedy to treat a serious health condition.
Eucalyptus Oil
Herbalists have recommended eucalyptus oil for hundreds of years to help relieve congestion and infection in the sinuses, according to Peace Health. One of the easiest ways to use eucalyptus oil is to place a drop or two into an inhaler, which you can keep in your bedroom and use during the night. Because the oil is infused into the vapor, it may help clear and soothe your sinuses as you inhale it. Do not use eucalyptus oil at the same time as other homeopathic remedies, because it renders them inactive.
Sinupret
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the herbal preparation Sinupret may be helpful in relieving sinus symptoms, and can help sinuses drain. In addition to relieving sinusitis and allergy symptoms, one or more of the herbs in Sinupret may help boost your immune system. Sinupret is formulated with a mixture of European elder, sorrel, cowslip and European vervain. Any of these herbs may produce side effects, so contact your health practitioner to discuss whether this product will be helpful to your condition.
Elderberry
Elderberry, or Sambucus niger, is commonly prescribed by herbal practitioners to strengthen the immune system and for the treatment of upper respiratory problems including bacterial sinusitis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Elderberry may reduce swelling in the sinuses and the nose, relieve congestion and act not only as an anti-inflammatory but also as an antiviral and anti-microbial agent. Although there is little scientific research available, anecdotal evidence indicates that elderberry may destroy free radicals and reduce infection thanks to its high levels of anthocyanins and flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties. Elderberry is available in syrup form at most health food stores. Elderberry is generally considered safe; however, it may produce side effects in sensitive individuals. If symptoms occur, stop using it and call your health practitioner.
Homeopathic Sabadilla
Although Sabadilla is a homeopathic remedy, it is derived from an herbal source and is often used for treatment of sinus problems, according to homeopath Dr. William Boericke in the "Materia Medica and Repertory." It especially helps alleviate sneezing. Sabadilla is often used to treat hay fever and other conditions where there is unremitting, spasmodic sneezing with copious, watery nasal discharge. It may also be helpful in cases where the eyes tear along with the nasal discharge. Sabadilla is available over the counter at health food stores. Consult your homeopath before using this remedy.
