The number of calories in hard alcohol, or distilled liquor, varies depending on the type of liquor, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Consuming hard liquor can add many calories to a person's diet.
Types of Liquor
Hard alcohol or distilled spirits include liquors such as vodka, rum, gin and liqueurs that contain added sugars and flavoring. The NIAAA says that most hard liquors contain an average of 98 calories for each 1.5-oz. serving, while liqueurs contain an average of 188 calories for each 1.5-oz. serving.
Considerations
The NIAAA notes that many drinks prepared with liquor are cocktails that are prepared from a mixture of alcohols, such as vodka, rum or gin, and juice or soda. These mixed drinks often have much higher caloric content than a one-shot serving of pure liquor.
Solutions
The NIAAA suggests that drinkers track their daily alcohol intake. People who want to control alcohol intake or reduce caloric consumption should try tracking their consumption for several weeks and set realistic goals to slowly cut back on the intake of high-calorie drinks.
