Pregnancy is a time when consuming extra calories and vitamins and minerals is vital. Twin pregnancies are generally monitored to ensure proper nutrition for mother and fetuses, and discussing calories with your doctor is the best way to determine your nutritional needs during pregnancy.

Importance

During a twin pregnancy, your body goes through many changes along with your unborn children. One is weight gain. According to Parents.com, if you are pregnant with twins, 35 to 45 pounds is an appropriate weight gain by the end of your pregnancy.

Calories

The average diet consists of 2,000 calories. It is recommended that women pregnant with twins consume 2,700 calories each day to maintain proper nutrition for mother and development of the fetuses. Most doctors suggest taking a pre-natal vitamin and mineral supplement to reduce the risk of developing anemia.

Calories for Breastfeeding

If you are planning on breastfeeding your twins, Breastfeeding Basics recommends an additional 200 to 500 calories per day. Breastfeeding is not only healthy for your baby, it will also help you burn more calories and gain your pre-pregnancy body back quicker
