If you are interested in losing weight, you may find it hard to choose among the numerous popular diets available. Edward Ash-Milby, a Barnes and Noble book buyer, told NPR that consumers "hook into one diet and it doesn't work so well for them and they find another diet that sounds more interesting." Researching diets prior to making any purchases can save you money.

The Secret to Low Carb Success

In her book "The Secret to Low Carb Success," author Laura Richard evaluates some of the most popular low-carbohydrate diets on the market, including the Zone diet and Atkins. The book offers a brief overview of each diet and then compares them. Richard includes evaluations of each plan from real users. She also includes possible stumbling blocks for each diet and informs readers how to overcome them.

The Ten Biggest Diet Myths

Warren Peary, a health journalist, provides an excellent evaluation of many popular diet plans in his book. Peary takes a scientific approach, conducting a review of the scientific literature supporting or refuting some of the claims made by the various plans. The book is well documented and research references are noted, offering the reader the opportunity to read the full article. The book also includes practical nutritional advice, providing readers with a clear explanation of what works and why.

The Diet Cure

"The Diet Cure" often reads more like a textbook than a simple diet book. Author Julia Ross, a clinical psychologist, critiques both popular diets and weight loss plans, such as Weight Watchers. She discusses vitamin deficiencies, the dangers of too much refined sugar and the development of food allergies that chronic dieters sometimes face.

The Gale Encyclopedia of Diets

"The Gale Encyclopedia of Diets" is one of the most comprehensive reviews of diet plans available. The two-volume set offers a collection of articles that evaluate the pros and cons of each diet and discusses special diet plans, such as diabetic diets. The book discusses special concerns, such as regulatory information, provides 250 related charts, research data, and a glossary of key terms related to each diet. The encyclopedia includes an appendix that references support groups and associations related to the diet plans.
