A migraine is an especially painful type of headache. The pain may be pulsing or throbbing in one area of the head. During migraines, you may experience nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light. According to the National Institutes of Health, migraines are three times more common in women than in men. They may be the result of hormonal changes, stress, anxiety or poor diet. Certain medications or minerals may aid in migraine relief.
Magnesium
The Linus Pauling Institute reports that people who suffer from frequent migraines may have lower intracellular magnesium levels than people who do not experience migraines. Magnesium supplementation leads to an increase in magnesium levels in individuals with migraines. In addition to supplement form, magnesium can also be obtained through dietary sources. Good choices include green vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains.
Tryptophan
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, tryptophan may aid in relief from migraines. Tryptophan is converted into serotonin, an important chemical in the brain that may help promote headache relief. It can be obtained in supplement form or through the diet. Dietary sources include turkey, tuna fish, shellfish, cottage cheese and soy products.
Calcium
The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that women who experience premenstrual syndrome often suffer from headaches. Calcium supplements or calcium-rich foods may help to relieve symptoms of this syndrome such as headaches. Dietary sources of calcium include green leafy vegetables, almonds and beans.
