Collagen is a substance that gives the skin strength and elasticity. When collagen fibers that connect to the skin break down and become stretched, cellulite can develop. Although this can cause an embarrassing dimpled look on the skin, it does not pose a major health risk. Applying a topical cream or salve is not a good solution for cellulite. Your best bet is to adjust your diet and lifestyle habits.

Calorie Cutting

One of the most beneficial treatments for cellulite is weight loss, MayoClinic.com says. The best way to reduce weight is by cutting your calories. If you were to reduce your daily intake by 500 to 1,000 calories, you can conceivably lose 1 to 2 lbs. weekly. To find your starting intake, track your calories for a day using an online tracker. Reduce from this number. For example, if you currently take in 2,400 calories, make your new total 1,900 or 1,400. Select foods that are low in saturated fat, sugar and sodium, including fruits, vegetables, beans, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.

Beverages

Beverages like soda, sweetened tea, lemonade, slushies and alcohol all contain calories in the form of liquid that can still cause weight gain. To help fight cellulite, replace all of these beverages with water. Not only is it calorie-free, but it also flushes toxins from your system. The Institute of Medicine recommends that women get about 90 oz. of water daily and men get about 120. Have a glass of water with your meals to help fill yourself up.

Clothing

The type of clothing you wear can have an impact on cellulite. Medical News Today says underwear with tight elastic across the buttocks can restrict blood flow and contribute to cellulite formation. Prevent this by wearing comfortable, loose-fitting garments.

Movement

Cardiovascular exercise burns calories, improves your lung capacity and promotes weight loss. Choose a type of cardio that you enjoy and work out four or five days a week. Brisk walking, running, elliptical training, stair climbing, biking and rowing are examples. To lose weight, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity. If you do not have time to do this in one shot, split it up into multiple sessions.

Weight Training

The thighs, glutes, hips and butt are the most commonly affected areas when it comes to cellulite. Spend two or three days a week doing weight training exercises for these areas. This will give your lower body a leaner look as you lose weight and you will also be building muscle, which raises your metabolic rate. Perform exercises like squats, leg presses, lunges, step-ups and leg extensions.
