Installing a baby bike seat onto your mountain or road bike will enable your small child to partake in your cycling activities. Seats for children are commonly mounted behind the seat of your bike. As of 2010, companies produce baby bike seats that allow your small child to sit in front of you throughout the pedaling process. According to Wee Ride, these front-seat designs increase your ability to safely distribute your weight while turning and maneuvering your bicycle. Make sure your child wears a properly fitting helmet during your bike ride.
Step 1
Extend the kickstand of your mountain bike or road bike to ensure it remains in the upright position. Identify the mounting bar of your forward-riding child seat. Find the hex bolt located on the top of the mounting bar. Loosen the hex bolt using an Allen wrench. Remove the hex bolt from the bar. Place the mounting bar onto the top tube of your bike.
Step 2
Locate the brackets found on either end of the mounting bar. Loosen the bolts of the rear bracket using an Allen wrench. Remove the rear bracket from the mounting bar. Extend the back edge of the mounting bar to rest against the post of your seat. Fasten the rear bracket around the seat post. Tighten the bolts of the bracket with the Allen wrench.
Step 3
Loosen the bolts of the front bracket using the Allen wrench. Remove the front bracket from the assembly of the mounting bar. Identify the head tube of your bike frame located under the handlebars. Extend the front of the mountain bar to rest against the head tube. Fasten the front bracket around the head tube. Tighten the bracket bolts with the Allen wrench.
Step 4
Place the hex bolt back through the top of the mounting bar. Tighten the hex bolt with the Allen wrench to secure the position of the mounting bar. Locate the large black thumbscrew found to the left of the hex bolt. Loosen the screw using your thumb and forefinger. Align your forward riding bike seat onto the mounting bar.
Step 5
Tighten the thumbscrew to fasten your new baby carrier in place. Rotate your handlebars to ensure the seat does not hinder your movement. Make necessary adjustments by loosening the brackets and repositioning the seat. Place your small child who weighs 40 lbs. or less into the new bike seat. Fasten the securing harness around your child's waist and shoulders.
