How to Relieve Pain With an Ankle-Foot Orthosis

An ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is a brace that supports the ankle by holding the foot and ankle in the correct position. Proper position and alignment distribute your body weight and improve balance. Wearing an ankle-foot orthosis can help to correct foot and ankle problems as well as relieve any pain associated with a foot and ankle disorder. The brace is designed to control the motion of the ankle while giving support to the foot. But a foot and ankle brace must be worn in the right way for it to be effective.

Step 1

Get the right prescription for a brace that will increase stability of the ankle joint. This can help reduce pain not only in the foot but also in the knee, hip and lower back. Lawrence Huppin, D.P.M., writes in the April 2005 issue of "Podiatry Today" that while podiatrists commonly prescribe AFOs for patients who have arthritis of the ankle and/or foot, flatfeet, ankle sprains, tendonitis, inflammation of the posterior tibial tendon or drop foot, a correct casting technique is required for a successful outcome.

Step 2

Wear your orthosis every day for maximum benefit. Begin breaking it in slowly by wearing it for only 1 hour on the first day. Increase wearing time by 1 or 2 hours each day after that. If the orthosis is fit properly, you should feel a firm pressure but not any additional pain.

Step 3

Check the skin on your foot, ankle and leg for calluses, pressure sores or other signs of irritation. Do this every day, especially during the breaking-in period. The brace may need to be adjusted if you experience tenderness, pain or redness that does not go away. Contact your podiatrist or orthopedist. Do not attempt to make adjustments yourself.

Step 4

Wear low heel shoes that are slightly wider. A larger shoe size can make wearing the orthosis more comfortable. Choose shoes that will offer adequate support. Avoid shoes with an open back or open toe design. Shoes with laces help hold your foot in place.

Step 5

Keep the skin on your legs and feet clean. Wash the bottoms of your feet and between your toes every day with warm water and mild soap. Dry your skin before wearing the orthosis. This prevents bacteria that thrive on moist skin from causing dermatitis.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you notice swelling after standing for a prolonged period of time, remove the brace and elevate your leg until the swelling goes down.
  • Wearing footwear with higher heels with an orthosis can strain your knees and back, causing pain in those areas.
