Stretch marks are lines that appear on the body as a result of rapid growth or weight gain. The lines occur as a result of a disruption in the skin's production of collagen when the area becomes overstretched. The lines will start off as reddish and purplish in color, but can eventually lighten. Common areas that stretch marks can appear are on the breasts, thighs, hips and stomach. Although stretch marks may not completely disappear, you can use methods to reduce their appearance.
Step 1
Apply a stretch mark cream to the areas of your body where the problem is apparent. There are several creams available over the counter that can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Examples include StriVectin-SD and Palmer's Cocoa Butter for Stretch Marks.
Step 2
Use a sunless tanning solution. These lotions and sprays can tan the areas where the stretch marks appear and reduce their appearance. However, natural tanning will not likely work since the stretch marks will typically not tan in the sun.
Step 3
Drink a lot of water. Water can improve your skin's elasticity and reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Aim for at least eight to 10 glasses of water a day.
Step 4
Adjust your diet. Stretch marks can result as a nutritional deficiency and making sure you get enough of the required foods can counteract the effects. Make sure you get enough vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc and protein. Examples of foods high in these nutrients include oranges, apples, nuts, herring, tuna, salmon, herring, carrots, grapefruit, eggs, beans and lean cuts of meat.
Step 5
Speak to a plastic surgeon. If you are unable to reduce the stretch marks on your own, get help from a plastic surgeon. There are several methods that they can use on stretch marks. Potential procedures include laser therapy, dermabrasion and chemical peeling.
