About Nordette

Nordette is an oral contraceptive that goes under the generic name ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and levonorgestrel (progesterone), two hormones combined to prevent pregnancy. Other brand names for Nordette are Levora, Aviane and Lutera. Oral contraceptives are the most popular reversible contraceptive method available in the United States. As with any oral contraceptive the efficacy of Nordette depends on a woman using the Pill correctly and consistently. Nordette tablets are available by prescription only.

Function

Nordette works to prevent pregnancy by preventing the release and maturation of the female egg from the ovary into the uterus. It prevents the male sperm from reaching the egg by changing the consistency of the mucus in the cervix (lower end of the uterus connected to the vagina). It also changes the lining of the uterus (endometrium) preventing the attachment of the fertilized egg in the uterus. Nordette tablets are available by prescription only.

According to Drugs.com, Nordette "can cause birth defects." Drugs.com also recommends waiting at least four weeks after your baby is born before taking Nordette---six weeks if you are breast feeding. The use of Nordette is contraindicated with a history of breast or uterine cancer, migraine headaches or high blood pressure and abnormal vaginal bleeding or heart or liver problems.
