Thinning hair is a problem that plagues American men, women and children, according to MayoClinic.com. This cosmetic concern can be the result of irritation to the hair or scalp, hormonal fluctuations and/or hair follicles that experience a shorter growth phase than normal hair growth. One over-the-counter treatment utilized to reduce the appearance of thinning hair is Nioxin Scalp Therapy.

Significance

Nioxin Scalp Therapy is part of the Nioxin brand's three-step hair therapy, deisgned to slow down or stop hair loss from occurring. The Nioxin system includes Nioxin Cleanser, Nioxin Scalp Therapy and Nioxin Scalp Treatment, according to the company's website. The Scalp Therapy treatment works much like a hair conditioner to restore moisture and volume to the hair.

Function

When applied to the scalp, Nioxin Scalp Therapy and the other products in the Nioxin line are designed to reduce the level of dihydrotestosterone --- also known as DHT --- in the scalp. The body can take testosterone and convert it to DHT. Because DHT is associated with male hair loss and shrinking hair follicles, inhibiting DHT can slow hair loss. Nioxin Scalp Therapy also contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to protect the hair from damage, according to Nioxin.com.

Use

Nioxin Scalp Therapy is recommended for use immediately after the Nioxin Cleanser to remove dirt and oils from the hair, according to Nioxin.com. Apply Nioxin Scalp Therapy to your hands first, as the viscosity tends to change. Rub the product between your hands, then apply to the hair, massaging in gently at the scalp and working your way up to the ends. Leave on for one to three minutes to allow the treatment to fully soak into the hair. Rinse with warm water when the time has elapsed.

Benefits

While many hair treatments aim to clean and moisturize the hair, Nioxin Scalp Therapy cares for both the hair and the scalp. By using Nioxin Scalp Therapy, its manufacturer claims that you can prevent hair products from clogging the hair follicles, which can contribute to thinning hair. Using Nioxin Scalp Therapy can contribute to thicker-looking hair because the scalp and hair follicles are healthier. An estimated nine out of 10 people reported observing thicker hair as a result of using the three-step Nioxin treatment, including the Nioxin Scalp Therapy, according to Nioxin.com.

Warning

The United States Food & Drug Administration has not tested Nioxin's claims to thicken the hair and reduce hair loss, according to The Beauty Brains. Some users may see results, while others may not. Read the labels carefully, and try to maintain a realistic attitude toward the results that Nioxin Scalp Therapy can provide.
